Occupation:      Architect

Kimbum is a bright-eyed idealist with a penchant for bright smiles and a hearty laugh in most situations. He is a dedicated and hard worker, putting his clan’s passed down knowledge to good use designing lavish homes for the wealthy. But when the time comes he often moonlights as one of the many workers to help build said homes, enjoying the manual labour as much as the design process itself. It has unfortunately come with the side effect of aching shoulders and a bad back.Around his daughter he is much more of a goofball, always doing his best to ensure she feels safe and happy, not matter what it takes. She is his biggest source of pride in life, and he will often talk grandly about her to others who will listen. There is however a side of him he shows to no one. A melancholic lonely widower who will spend sleepless nights talking at the moon, hoping his wife will hear the great news he shares of their daughter. When alone, he will stop hiding his fears, aches and worries, letting emotions usually locked away flow over him fully.

Background

Life for Kimbum began much like life for any heir of the Ong name. He would spend countless hours each day learning the intricate detailed work of an architect: from picking the right materials to how to properly insulate a home with the correct building techniques. Then there was the calligraphy and the art of a steady hand, ensuring every plan he drew up would be able to be followed by anyone, be they commoner or lord.Yet for as studious as he was, he would often find his eyes wandering from his work to young seamstress that worked in the nearby shop. A girl he came to know as Cha Migyeong. She was the beauty that inspired him, and from glances over his studies to short letters and portraits drawn from memory, the two slowly grew closer. The two courted as a couple should, though there had been pushback from his parents due to her lower class. Their acceptance first came when they saw that Kimbum would put his work first if needed, and not let himself get lured away on a whim by a girl.Their union was finally settled as Kimbum turned 20. With the blessing of his parents, he had asked for Migyeong’s hand in marriage, and the two got united the same summer. Having seen the way the two had fought for each other’s love, their families had said the union was fated to last forever, as their love could weather any storm.Their life together blossomed alongside Kimbum’s career, and soon enough Migyeong was with child. The onset of the birth had been the first and last time Kimbum had walked out on his work, hoping to comfort his wife and welcome his child into the world. But the birth came with unfortunate complications. Despite Migyeong’s efforts, her body could not take the whole affair. Though he that day gained a darling daughter, Kimbum lost his wife and the love of his life. In honor of her mother, he named her Miyoung, and vowed by her side to protect and care for their daughter as best he could.

The following years were rife with trials. Despite the best support his clan’s money could get him, he became exhausted. Sleepless nights and hard work left little room to mourn and process. The little time he could he would take up the crafts associated with his designs, helping his sangmin employees as they built the hanoks he designed. With time the work would build his body and harden his mettle, earning respect from his workers and sideways glances from other Jungin for his wide build. But his mind only existed for two things: His work and his daughter. She was steadily growing up and proving to be a near spitting image of his wife. She was his everything, and there was no task too low he would not perform to delight his young one. This attitude stuck with him even as she grew older and started finding his playfulness to be embarrassing. His one wish in life is to find a good husband for her, that will take care of her when he is gone and let her be the free spirit he raised her to be.
